Never Be Thirsty Again
Nothing quenches our thirst like water. But even the satisfaction that water brings does not last. Soon we become thirsty again.
Jesus once met a woman by the well. She had come to the well to draw water. Jesus asked her for water, but she was startled, since Jesus was a member of another religious-ethnic group. Jesus, intending to reveal to her His identity, started to speak about the water that He gives.
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” (John 4:10, ESV)
The woman was surprised that Jesus could give her water because the well was deep and He had nothing to draw water with. But Jesus was alluding to another kind of water. He said,
“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14, ESV)
This water that Jesus promises to those who ask Him for it is unlike any we know. Anyone who drinks the water He gives will never be thirsty again. The water Jesus offers lives within the person, and this water will become a spring—a spring that wells up to eternal life.
Human beings are spiritual creatures. Our spirits, like our physical bodies, also thirst. We have deeper needs than just food and shelter. We long for meaning, purpose, lasting value, and fulfillment. Trying to fill the spiritual void with sensual pleasures, achievements, and relationships brings only short-lived relief. This inward thirst can only be filled by reuniting with God our Maker.
The water that Jesus describes is the Spirit of God which Jesus will give to those who believe in Him and ask Him for this gift. He fulfilled His promise by pouring out the Holy Spirit on His disciples after He had risen from the dead, and He continues to pour out His Holy Spirit today.
In the True Jesus Church, the church that the Lord Jesus has established, we see the Spirit that Jesus promised poured out on those who ask. It is a visible and tangible experience testifying that God indeed dwells in us. As the Bible says, “And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.” (1 John 3:24, ESV).
With God’s Holy Spirit in us, our spirits are forever satisfied with God’s boundless love, peace, and strength. God Himself dwells with us and in us through His Spirit. His very presence along with all the good things He showers upon us are sufficient for our lifetime. His Spirit will also raise us up one day from the dead so we may enjoy everlasting life with Him.
Why not take up Jesus’ offer, come to Him, and ask Him for the spring of water that will quench your thirst forever?
