A Touch of Healing Grace

When life brings problems we cannot solve, it is only natural to seek help. But human help is often limited. Human solutions are imperfect. When we meet a dead end, what can we do?

There once was a woman who encountered such a dead end. Afflicted by chronic illness, she had a discharge of blood for twelve years. Not only did she suffer much under many physicians, but she had also spent everything she had. Instead of getting better, she grew worse. Her situation seemed hopeless.

It was then that this woman heard about Jesus. Seizing the opportunity, she determined to go behind Jesus in the crowd and touch His garment.

For she said, “If I touch even His garments, I will be made well.” (Mark 5:28, ESV)

The woman’s illness ultimately brought her to Jesus. Similarly, our challenges in life are like a compass, pointing us towards Jesus. He is our true Helper. This woman had exhausted all her options. There was no one else to turn to, no other way out. Yet in her desperation, she found a new direction in Jesus. She believed Jesus could change her life, so hope was rekindled once more.

When we have reached rock bottom, do we also believe Jesus can help us rise again? According to His will, He can heal the sicknesses of our body, the brokenness buried in our heart, and the struggles that plague our mind. In our greatest need, we must seek Jesus and put our faith in Him. Only then will we be able to experience His healing grace.

The woman was healed, not by chance, but by faith. First, she fully believed in the boundless magnitude of Jesus’ power. She was convinced that even touching Jesus’ garments would be enough to heal her. Second, she demonstrated her faith through action. If the woman had simply heard of Jesus but did not act on that knowledge, she would have missed the opportunity to be healed. Instead, she demonstrated her faith by boldly seeking Him out. No doubts or questions would hinder her determination. Not even the thronging crowds would delay her any longer. Her faith held firm as she reached out. Her conviction echoing in one persistent thought: Just one touch.

She came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. (Luke 8:44, ESV)

Jesus’ power indeed is so great! At the touch of the edge of His garment, the woman was immediately healed. One touch changed her life. No matter the size of our problems, great or small, nothing is too difficult for Jesus. He can work mightily in our lives too, as long as we are willing to have faith in Him. For while the woman’s touch initiated the healing, it was ultimately her faith that made her well.

And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” (Mark 5:34, ESV)

After twelve long years, the woman was finally healed. The impossible became possible. A hopeless situation received a new and living hope. Peace and joy were restored once again. These blessings and this healing grace is also freely offered to us through the Lord Jesus Christ. If we are in the midst of struggle, do not delay. Jesus is our Healer. He is more than willing and able to help us. Come boldly before Jesus and reach out to Him. For a touch of His power and grace will be more than enough, even for us.
