A promise
God promises to give His Spirit
Isa 32:15 – until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.
Isa 44:3 – For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.
Isa 59:21 – “And as for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the LORD: “My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children’s offspring,” says the LORD, “from this time forth and forevermore.”
Ezek 11:19 – And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,
Ezek 36:26 – And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Ezek 36:27 – And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

Joel 2:28 – “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.
Joel 2:29 – Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
Zech 12:10 – “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
Lk 24:49 – And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Acts 1:4 – And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
Acts 2:17 – “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;

Jesus promises the coming of the Spirit (Lk 24:49; Jn 7:37-39; 14:16-20; 15:26-27; 16:7-16, 25; Acts 1:4-5, 8; 11;16)
The Lord Jesus has received the promise of the Holy Spirit and poured out the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:33-34)
The Holy Spirit is a promise to believers who repent and are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38-39; Gal 3:14)
The Holy Spirit is called the promised Holy Spirit (Eph 1:13). [footnote text=“Or, more literally, "the Holy Spirit of promise".”]
Helper sent by the Father and Jesus
Jn 14:16 – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
Jn 14:26 – But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Jn 15:26 – “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
Jn 16:7 – Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
1 Jn 2:1 – My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. [footnote text=“Here, the "Helper" (<i>paraklētos</i>, παράκλητος) is translated "advocate".”]
A gift
Called the gift of the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:38 – And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 10:45 – And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.
Called the gift of God
Acts 8:20 – But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!

Acts 11:17 – If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?”

Lk 11:13 – If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Jn 3:34 – For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.

1 Cor 2:12 – Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.
2 Cor 11:4 – For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.
Gal 3:2 – Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?
Receiving the Spirit is called baptism with the Holy Spirit
Mk 1:8 – I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Mt 3:11 – “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Lk 3:16 – John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Jn 1:33 – I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
Acts 1:5 – for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 11:16 – And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

Believe in the Lord Jesus
Jn 7:38 – Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'”

Work of the Holy Spirit on believers
We are born of/according to the Spirit
Jn 3:5 – Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Jn 3:6 – That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Jn 3:8 – The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Gal 4:29 – But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.
Quenches our thirst
Jn 7:37 – On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
Jn 7:38 – Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'”

Be with us forever

Teach us all things and remind us of Jesus’ words

Guides us into all the truth and declares what He has heard
Jn 16:13 – When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
Jn 16:14 – He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Jn 16:15 – All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Enables us to speak in tongues

God’s love is poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit
Rom 5:5 – and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
We serve in the new life of the Spirit
Rom 7:6 – But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.
Sets us free
Rom 8:2 – For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
2 Cor 3:17 – Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Dwells in/among us
Rom 8:9 – You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
Rom 8:11 – If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
1 Cor 3:16 – Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
1 Cor 6:19 – Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
Gal 4:6 – And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
2 Tim 1:14 – By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
Jas 4:5 – Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?
Gives life to our mortal bodies
Rom 8:10 – But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Rom 8:11 – If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Bears witness
Rom 8:16 – The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
Jn 15:26 – “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
Heb 10:15 – And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
Helps us and intercedes for us
Rom 8:26 – Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Rom 8:27 – And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
We are sanctified by the Spirit
Rom 15:16 – to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
1 Cor 6:11 – And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
2 Thess 2:13 – But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
1 Pet 1:2 – according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood:May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
We are washed and justified by the Spirit of God
1 Cor 6:11 – And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Reveals the things of God to us
1 Cor 2:10 – these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
We were baptized in one Spirit [footnote text=“"In one Spirit" in the Greek may also be understood as "by means of one Spirit"”]
1 Cor 12:13 – For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body–Jews or Greeks, slaves or free–and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
We are a letter written with the Spirit of God
2 Cor 3:3 – And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
We are transformed by the Spirit
2 Cor 3:18 – And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
We are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit
Eph 1:13 – In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
We have access in one Spirit to the Father
Eph 2:18 – For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
God strengthens us through the Spirit
Eph 3:16 – that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
We worship by the Spirit of God
Phil 3:3 – For we are the real circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh–
We are renewed by the Spirit
Tit 3:5 – he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
Rests on us when we suffer for Christ
1 Pet 4:14 – If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.
The Holy Spirit and our inheritance
Rom 8:14 – For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Rom 8:15 – For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Rom 8:16 – The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
Rom 8:17 – and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Rom 8:23 – And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
2 Cor 5:1 – For we know that if the tent, which is our earthly home, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2 Cor 5:2 – For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling,
2 Cor 5:3 – if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked.
2 Cor 5:4 – For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened–not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
2 Cor 5:5 – He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
Gal 4:6 – And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
Gal 4:7 – So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
Eph 1:13 – In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
Eph 1:14 – who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Eph 4:30 – And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Believers called upon to act by the Spirit
Walk according to or by the Spirit
Rom 8:4 – in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Gal 5:16 – But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Live by/according to the Spirit
Rom 8:5 – For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Gal 5:25 – If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
Set mind on the things of the Spirit
Rom 8:5 – For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6 – To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
Let the Spirit dwell in us
Rom 8:9 – You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
Rom 8:11 – If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
By the Spirit put to death the deeds of the body

Bears witness
