“Jesus” (Greek Ἰησοῦς) is from the Hebrew, yēšûaʿ, יֵשׁוּעַ, which is a later form of yĕhôšûa,ʿיְהוֹשׁוּעַ
yēšûaʿ, יֵשׁוּעַ and yĕhôšûa,ʿיְהוֹשׁוּעַ are translated as the name “Joshua” in the Old Testament. The meaning of the name is “yĕ is salvation,” where yĕ stands for YHWH, the name of God.
The meaning of the name “Jesus” is evident in Mt 1:21. The angel explained to Joseph that the child to be born is to be called Jesus because “he will save his people from their sins.”
Significance of the “name”
The name of the Lord Jesus extends beyond the pronunciation of the word “Jesus.” The following examples illustrate this truth:
“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12). We are saved by the name of Jesus. That does not mean that our salvation is found in the word “Jesus.” Rather, our salvation is from Jesus Himself, the One who came in the flesh and died for us.
To have the name of Jesus be glorified in us (2 Thess 1:12) does not mean that the word “Jesus” is to be glorified. What Paul is teaching is that others may come to honor the Lord Jesus through the worthy conduct of believers.
Holding fast to the name of Jesus (Rev 2:13) is not about the word “Jesus,” but being unwavering in faith in the Lord.
Thus, the name of the Lord Jesus represents who He is, what He has done, and His relationship to us.
To call upon the name of Jesus and to believe in Jesus is to honor Him as our Lord and to trust in Him as our only source of salvation. The Lord is our Lord because we call upon His name (1 Cor 1:2).
To be called by the name of the Lord Jesus (Acts 15:17; Jas 2:7) means to be identified as belonging to the Lord.
The preaching of repentance for the forgiveness of sins in the name of Jesus pertains to proclaiming the good message that our sins may be forgiven as a result of the salvation that Jesus has brought to us.
Paul reminds the Corinthians that they have not been baptized in the name of Paul implies that they do not belong to Paul (1 Cor 1:13). Instead, the fact that they have been baptized in His name is a reminder that they belong to no one else but Christ and should pledge their total allegiance to Christ.
The religious authority questioned the apostles, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” (Acts 4:7). The implication is that the name of Jesus represents an authority that comes from the exalted Christ. It was by this authority that the apostles preached and taught the message of Jesus.
To “do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Col 3:17) is not to keep invoking the name, but to live in a manner that reflects the goodness of our Lord.
