The life of Samuel (1 Sam 1:9-13:15; 15:1-16:13; 25:1)
Samuel is lent to the Lord as long as he lives (1 Sam 1:1-2:36)
Hannah, the barren wife of Elkanah, vows that if the Lord gives her a son, she will give him to the Lord as a Nazarite for life. The Lord remembers Hannah and gives her Samuel (1 Sam 1:1-20)
After Samuel is weaned, Hannah takes Samuel with her to the house of the Lord at Shiloh to fulfill her vow. Hannah prays to exult in the Lord. Elkanah returns home, and the boy Samuel ministers to the Lord in the presence of Eli, the priest (1 Sam 1:21-2:11)
Eli’s two sons do not know the Lord and treat the offering of the Lord with contempt (1 Sam 2:12-17)
Samuel ministers before the Lord, clothed with a linen ephod. His mother makes a little robe to give him each year during the yearly sacrifice. Eli blesses Elkanah and his wife with more children. The Lord visits Hannah and gives her three more sons and two daughters. Samuel grows in the presence of the Lord (1 Sam 2:18-21)
When Eli is very old, he keeps hearing about the evil dealings of his sons. He asks them why they do such things, but they do not listen. It is the will of the Lord to put them to death (1 Sam 2:22-25)
Samuel continues to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and with man (1 Sam 2:26)
A man of God tells Eli a message from the Lord. The Lord asks Eli that if He has chosen Eli’s house as priests, why does Eli scorn His sacrifices by honoring his sons above the Lord? All of Eli’s descendants will die by the sword, and both of his sons will die on the same day. The Lord will raise up for Himself a faithful priest who will do according to what is in His heart and mind. The Lord will build for him a sure house forever, and Eli’s descendants will beg him for bread (1 Sam 2:27-36)
Samuel is called by the Lord (1 Sam 3:1-18)
As Samuel and Eli are lying down in the temple, the Lord calls Samuel. Samuel responds, “Here I am!” He runs to Eli three times, thinking that Eli had called him. By the third time, Eli perceives that the Lord is calling the boy. Eli instructs him what to say the next time the Lord calls (1 Sam 3:2-9)
The Lord comes, stands, and calls to Samuel as before. Samuel responds in the way Eli instructed. The Lord tells him that He will fulfill all the punishments that He spoke against Eli, and that the iniquity of Eli’s house will not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever (1 Sam 3:10-14)
Samuel lies down until morning and opens the doors of the temple. Samuel is afraid to tell the vision to Eli. Eli commands Samuel to tell him everything. When Samuel does so, Eli responds, “It is the Lord. Let Him do what seems good to Him.” (1 Sam 3:15-18)
Samuel as a judge (1 Sam 3:19-7:17)
As Samuel grows, the Lord is with him and lets none of his words fall to the ground. All Israel knows that Samuel is established as a prophet of the Lord. The Lord appears again at Shiloh to Samuel by His word (1 Sam 3:19-21)
Israel goes out to battle the Philistines and is defeated. The elders of Israel suggest bringing the ark of the covenant of the Lord to the battle, that it may save them. Thirty thousand foot soldiers are slaughtered, the ark is captured, and the two sons of Eli die (1 Sam 4:1-11)
Eli hears the news of the great defeat, his sons’ death, and the capture of the ark. Eli falls over backward, breaks his neck, and dies. His daughter-in-law also hears the news, gives birth to a son, and dies, bemoaning that the glory has departed from Israel (1 Sam 4:12-22)
The ark is brought into Philistine territory for seven months. The hand of the Lord is heavy against them and against their idols, regardless of where it is sent. The Philistines send back the ark of God with a guilt offering of five golden tumors and five golden mice, in efforts to lighten the Lord’s hand from them. The Israelites rejoice to see the ark and offer sacrifices to the Lord at Beth-shemesh (1 Sam 5:1-6:18)
The Lord strikes seventy of the men at Beth-shemesh for looking on the ark, and the people mourn. They send for men of Kiriath-jearim, who bring the ark to the house of Abinadab. Eleazar, Abinadab’s son, takes charge of the ark. All the house of Israel laments after the Lord for the twenty-some years it is at Kiriath-jearim (1 Sam 6:19-7:2).
Samuel tells all the house of Israel that if they are returning to the Lord with all their hearts, they must put away their idols so that He will deliver them from the Philistines. The people obey (1 Sam 7:3-4)
All Israel gathers at Mizpah for Samuel to pray for them. They draw out water and pour it before the Lord. They fast and confess their sins (1 Sam 7:5-6)

Israelites demand a king because Samuel’s sons take bribes and pervert justice. Samuel is displeased, but the Lord tells him to obey the voice of the people. They reject the Lord from being king over them (1 Sam 8:1-8)
Samuel solemnly warns the people by showing them the ways of the king who will rule over them (1 Sam 8:9-18).
The king will
Take their sons and daughters to be his servants
Take the best of their fields, vineyards, olive orchards, and a tenth of the people’s grain and vineyards and give them to his own servants
Take their servants and the best of their young men and donkeys and put them to work
Take a tenth of their flocks
Make the people into slaves
When the people cry out because of the king they chose for themselves, the Lord will not answer.
The people refuse to listen. They want to be like all the nations who have a king to judge them and go before them in battle. Samuel repeats their words in the ears of the Lord and the Lord tells Samuel to make them a king (1 Sam 8:19-22)

When their fathers confessed their sin, the Lord sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel to deliver them, and they lived in safety.
When the people saw that the Ammonites came against them, they asked for a king, and the Lord set a king over them.
