Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead (1 Kgs 17:1; 21:17,28); (2 Kgs 1:3,8; 9:36)
Events
The life of Elijah (1 Kgs 17:1-21:29; 2 Kgs 1:1-2:18; 2 Chr 21:12-15)
Elijah prophesies of drought (1 Kgs 17:1-7)
After delivering the prophetic message of drought to Ahab, Elijah is instructed by God to hide by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan River (1 Kgs 17:1-3).
Elijah is fed bread and meat by ravens in the morning and evening, and he drinks by the brook, which eventually dries up due to the drought (1 Kgs 17:4-7).
The widow of Zarephath (1 Kgs 17:8-16)
Elijah is instructed by God to travel to Zarephath in Sidon. There he will dwell and be fed by a widow. He arrives and sees a widow gathering sticks and asks for water in a vessel and a morsel of bread (1 Kgs 17:8-11).
The widow replies that she only has a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. She will prepare one last meal for her and her son and await death. Elijah replies that the Lord will provide for her and her son until the famine ends, and that the flour and oil will not run out. But first she has to prepare a small cake for him. The widow obeys and her family has food for many days (1 Kgs 17:12-16).
Raising the widow of Zarephath’s son (1 Kgs 17:17-24)
The son of the widow became gravely ill until death. She makes the news known to Elijah, who then brings the son to his room to pray (1 Kgs 17:17-20).
After Elijah prays, he stretches himself upon the body three times and the child revives and reunites with his mother (1 Kgs 17:21-24).
Elijah prophesies of rain (1 Kgs 18:1-46)
God instructs Elijah to present himself before Ahab to tell him that rain will come to end the drought. The king instructs Obadiah, who is in charge of the king’s house, to search the land for water to find grass for livestock (1 Kgs 18:1-6).
Along the way, Obadiah meets Elijah, who instructs Obadiah to tell Ahab of Elijah’s whereabouts. Obadiah is hesitant at first, as he fears that Elijah might be taken away by the Spirit of the Lord elsewhere, hence endangering Obadiah’s life. Elijah assures him that he will present himself before the king. Obadiah obeys and Elijah meets Ahab (1 Kgs 18:7-16).
Elijah on Mount Carmel (1 Kgs 18:17-40)
Elijah orders Ahab to congregate all of Israel on Mount Carmel with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and four hundred prophets of Asherah. Ahab follows the instructions (1 Kgs 18:17-20).
Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal about their false god. Each of them prepare a bull on wood with no fire. The prophets call on their god, but there is no answer (1 Kgs 18:21-29).
Elijah repairs the altar of the Lord with twelve stones, makes a trench, puts the wood in order, and places a bull cut in pieces on the wood. He instructs four jars of water to be poured on the burnt offering and the wood, repeating this process three times. The water runs along the altar and fills the trench (1 Kgs 18:30-35).
At the time of offering, Elijah prays and the fire of the Lord comes down. It burns the offering and dries up the water in the trench. The prophets of Baal are captured and executed at the brook Kishon (1 Kgs 18:36-40).
The Lord sends rain (1 Kgs 18:41-46)
Elijah tells Ahab news of the sound of the rushing of rain and goes up to Mount Carmel to pray. He instructs his servant to look out to the sea seven times. On the seventh occasion, a small cloud is seen. The servant is instructed to send a message to Ahab to inform him to prepare his chariot and travel before the rain comes. Heavy rain falls. Ahab travels to Jezreel, and the Lord’s hand is on Elijah and he runs before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel (1 Kgs 18:41-46).
Hiding from Jezebel (1 Kgs 19:1-18)
News reaches Jezebel through Ahab that Elijah has killed all the prophets with a sword. Therefore, she seeks the life of Elijah, who flees to Beersheba. He leaves his servant behind and travels a day’s journey from Beersheba to the wilderness. He sits under a broom tree, asking for death. An angel wakes him up from sleep and tells him to eat the cake and drink from the jar of water prepared for him. This happens twice. With this sustenance, Elijah travels forty days and forty nights to Mount Horeb (1 Kgs 19:1-8).
In a cave on Mount Horeb, Elijah converses with God, saying that he is the only prophet left. God instructs him to go out and stand on the mountain before Him. A strong wind passes by, but the Lord is not in the wind. An earthquake occurs, but the Lord is not in the earthquake. A fire burns, but the Lord is not in the fire. After all these, there is a sound of a whisper, and Elijah goes out to the entrance of the cave. God delivers a few prophetic messages and instructions to him, telling him that there are still seven thousand who have not bowed down to the idol Baal (1 Kgs 19:9-18).
Elijah finds Elisha (1 Kgs 19:19-21)
When Elijah finds Elisha, he puts his cloak over him as Elijah passes by. From then on, Elisha assists him.
Elijah denounces Ahab & Jezebel (1 Kgs 21:17-27)
Elijah prophesies regarding Ahab, Jezebel, and their descendants’ ways of death, since they sinned against the Lord in the matter of Naboth’s vineyard, causing their people to sin also (1 Kgs 21:17-26).
After Ahab humbles himself before the Lord, God tells Elijah that He will not bring calamities in Ahab’s days but in his son’s (1 Kgs 21:27-29).
Elijah and Ahaziah (2 Kgs 1:1-18)
Elijah makes a prophecy that Ahaziah will not recover from his sickness. The messengers come back with the news to the king, and he identifies that the words came from Elijah, as he was described wearing a garment of hair and a leather belt (2 Kgs 1:1-8).
Three times Ahaziah sends a captain with his fifty men to bring Elijah to him. The first and second groups are consumed by fire, so the third captain and his fifty men ask to be spared from the fire of God. Elijah follows the third captain and repeats the same message to the king. Ahaziah dies according to the word of the Lord (2 Kgs 1:9-18; cf. Lk 9:54).
Elijah’s letter to Jehoram of Judah (2 Chr 21:12-15)
Elijah’s letter of prophecy contains warnings to Jehoram for leading the people to sin and his disease of the bowels.
Elijah’s ascension (2 Kgs 2:1-14)
Elijah and Elisha travel from Gilgal to Bethel, to Jericho, and by the Jordan River. Chariots and horses of fire separates them, Elijah goes up to heaven by a whirlwind, leaving his cloak behind with Elisha.
