YHWH, known as the Tetragrammaton for its four Hebrew alphabets, was regularly pronounced with its proper vowels until at least the destruction of the First Temple in 586 B.C.E. [footnote text=”Skolnik, Fred, and Michael Berenbaum. "God, Names of" <i>Encyclopedia Judaica</i>, Vol. 7, Macmillan Reference USA … in Association with Keter Publishing House Ltd., 2007: 7: 675.”]
YHWH is substituted with LORD in English Bibles and the LXX.
Yah is the abbreviated form of YHWH. It is found most often in the Psalms, in which the term “Hallelujah” joins the two words “Praise” and “Yah.”
Personal names compounded with YHWH [footnote text=”Freedman, David Noel, Helmer Ringgren, and M. P. O’Connor. “יהוה.” Ed. G. Johannes Botterweck. Trans. David E. Green. <i>Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament</i> 1986 : 501. Print. 15 vols..”]
YHWH in the initial position has two forms: “Yo” and “Yeho.” Examples of these forms include “Jonathan” and “Jehoiachin.”
YHWH in the final position also has two forms: “Yahu” and “Yah.” Examples of these forms include “Malchiah” and “Maaseiah.”
The meaning of the name is unclear. But it is generally thought to be derived from the verb “to be.” In Exodus 3, when Moses asked for the name of the God who appeared to Him, God’s reply was “I AM WHO I AM” (ʾehĕye ʾăšer ʾehĕye, אֶֽהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה; Ex 3:14). Then, God told Moses to say to the people of Israel, “‘I AM’ (ʾehĕye, אֶֽהְיֶה) has sent me to you” (Ex 3:14). In the next verse, God again told Moses to say to the people, “YHWH … has sent me to you.” The parallel between God’s elaboration of His identity and His name YHWH suggests a connection between the two.

Seldom used in reference to a foreign God (2 Kgs 17:31; 2 Chron 32:15; Dan 11:37-39). In all other cases it refers to the God of Israel. [footnote text=”Skolnik, Fred, and Michael Berenbaum. ʾĔlōhîm, אֱלֹהִים (plural form of ʾĔlôah, אֱלוֹהַּ; <word id=”H430″ type=”word” filterby=””>see all occurrences of the word</word>)
The plural form ʾelohim is used not only of pagan “gods” (e.g., Ex 12:12; 18:11; 20:3), but also of an individual pagan “god” (Judg 11:24; 2 Kings 1:2-3) and even of a “goddess” (1 Kings 11:5). In reference to Israel’s “god” it is used extremely often – more than 2,000 times – and often with the article, ha-ʾelohim, “the [true] god.” [footnote text=”Skolnik, Fred, and Michael Berenbaum. "God, Names of" <i>Encyclopedia Judaica</i>, Vol. 7, Macmillan Reference USA … in Association with Keter Publishing House Ltd., 2007: 7: 674.”]
Occasionally, the plural form ʾelohim, even when used of the god of Israel, is construed with a plural verb or adjective (e.g., Gen 20:13; 35:7; Ex 32:4, 8; 2 Sam 7:23; Ps 58:11), especially in the expression ʾelohim ḥayyim, “the living God.” In the vast majority of cases, however, the plural form is treated as if it were a noun in the singular. The LXX in Job translates šadday, שַׁדַּי as pantokratōr, παντοκράτωρ (“Almighty”), but this translation is unlikely the true etymology of the term.
